Getting to Know Lauren O'Brien

1.        NAME: Lauren Grace O'Brien
2.       Food: What do you like?
·         Candy: Chocolate, please! Reese's especially
·         Fruit: Apples and strawberries
·         Dinner: My mom's Steak & Rice.  Strips of steak in a creamy mushroom sauce--can't get much better than that.
·         Ice Cream: Chocolate Panda Paws!
·         Is there anything that you can’t (or don’t like) to eat? I don't prefer Brussels Sprouts (I mean, who does?), asparagus, or squishy sea food. I'd at least be willing to try anything, though!
3.       Birthday? March 1st
4.      Favorite thing to do off campus?
·         In Grove City? Beans on Broad or Sweet Cici's
·         Away from Grove City? Well, I haven't had too much experience being a Freshman without a car, but the giant corn maze I visited was pretty fun! Hehe. :P
5.       What is something you are excited about this year?Continuing to branch out and develop new relationships, having security in my first-year friendships. I am also pretty excited about the courses I will be taking!
6.      What is something that you are nervous about?
I am curious to see how my being a sophomore may affect/not affect my existing relationships with my friends on the hall.  I don't anticipate there  being any big problems, but I am not ruling out the possibility.  Getting used to yet again another schedule with higher responsibilities will take some adjusting as well.  I'm ready for the challenge, though!
7.       What is one thing you really want your floor to learn this year?
That we are weak and incapable of achieving any good thing apart from God's grace.
8.      Favorite movie?
Singin' in the Rain because I love musical theatre, tap dancing, Gene Kelly, the 20s, and good, clean fun!
9.       Favorite way to worship?
Under the stars, around a campfire, with a group of people that I know really love the Lord, singing any style of song with rich, biblical lyrics.
10.    Favorite author or book?
How can I choose? I love Jane Eyre, Lord of the Rings, The Kite Runner, and pretty much anything by C.S. Lewis (of couse).
11.     Love language(s) (if you know, if not that’s ok too)
Quality time, all the way.
12.    How do you relax?
By playing the piano and sining, going for a walk, or making tea and chilling on a given night with my roommate Holly.
13.     What do you need when you are feeling stressed?
Someone to say, "Lauren, snap out of it. It's going to turn out fine." ...and some tea or chocolate never hurts, either. :)
14.  Something I should know about you (as your supervisor)
I will probably have to plan an idea out practically before I get really, really excited about it.  I also have to continually battle overcommitment.
15.   Something that really stresses you out?
When I'm so overwhelmed that I feel like I don't have time to spend with people at a meal or chatting before bed.
16. How can we pray for you?
Please pray that I can be a witness for Christ during my summer job at a restaurant. Also pray that I will enjoy the present and look for ways to serve those in my immediate surroundings.

Getting to know JO!

Getting to Know Joanna Rutter

NAME: Joanna, Jo, JoLee, Joannie, Jojo. I like being called Jo the best. Because of Little Women.
2.       Food: What do you like?
·         Candy: Hershey's with almonds
·         Fruit: Grapes. Bananas. Raspberries.
·         Dinner: Tofu stir-fry!
·         Ice Cream: Grasshopper Pie
·         Is there anything that you can’t (or don’t like) to eat? MEAT DUH
3.       Birthday? Dec. 10th
4.      Favorite thing to do off campus?
·         In Grove City? Thrifty Threads
·         Away from Grove City? McConnel's Mill
5.       What is something you are excited about this year? Getting to do it all over again, and learning from my mistakes. Strengthening friendships with residents from this year. Getting to learn from a new staff. Being in an upperclassmen dorm for the first time.
6.      What is something that you are nervous about?  Programming better. Saturday night intervis duty (yuck). Letting go of expectations. Not having a co.
7.       What is one thing you really want your floor to learn this year?   That God is taking them on a journey, and that He always has somewhere deeper and farther to take them.
8.      Favorite movie?  Peter Pan WHY? Because there are fairies
9.       Favorite way to worship? Journaling
10.    Favorite author or book? Madeleine L'Engle. Every single thing she has ever written.
11.     Love language(s) OH TELL ME NICE WORDS PLEASE! Notes...encouragement...shoutouts...I also need hugs (and acts of service sometimes). Time and gifts (unless it's food) really are not important to me at all.
12.    How do you relax? Cleaning my room while watching SNL or Community
13.     What do you need when you are feeling stressed?  Food. Seriously, that's probably very helpful.
14.    Something I should know about you (as your supervisor)…   If I'm not hearing from you that I'm doing a good job, I will assume I am just doing an average job and might feel undervalued. Unless someone tells me, I won't know I'm doing well or very poorly. I will need like, looots of verbal feeback all the time.
15.     Something that really stresses you out?  People who try to control everything! I guess that's me trying to control things too by not controlling. But yeah, stubbornness or inflexibility is hard for me to deal with in situations. Also situations where I know I literally cannot do anything, but just have to wait.
How can we pray for you?  That I would be able to make meaningful connections with my girls before they leave. That I would be able to listen to who God is telling me that I am.

Love you guys!
Jo

RA Reflection #1

I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration, I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.
-J. W. von Goethe, d. 1832
